Configure a Static IP - Windows Vista, 7, Server

So you want to configure a static IP on your Windows Vista, 7 or Server machine, but are not sure how? It's easier than you think! Let's have a look.

The first thing you want to do is make sure you can get on the network after the changes, so lets first write down some necessary settings. Assuming you are already connected to your router and everything works fine:

Go to Start -> Run -> Type in cmd and press Enter. When greeted with command prompt, type in ipconfig /all

We need to note the default gateway (your routers address), as well as the DNS servers.

Next we need to go to Network Connections, right click your network adapter and then properties:

On the next screen double click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) :

Now for the grand finale!

I previously told you to note the default gateway as well as the DNS server IP addresses... I hope you listened because now they come in handy! Choose the "Use the following IP addresses" and "Use the following DNS settings" option buttons and fill in the blanks with the local IP you want to use for your machine, the subnet mask, as well as the default gateway and DNS server information that you noted earlier.
