Accessing your home routers administration options
Nov 29 2011 11:44 PM | mr.d in Computer Tutorials
So you bought a spankin' new router for your home, plugged it in, tried to connect to your new wireless connection and were greeted with the "Enter your password to connect". Of course some routers may come preconfigured to have an open connection, but I haven't went through enough to know for sure. Either way, to change or set a password you will need to enter your routers administration options. What if you don't want your wi-fi connection to be named after the model of your router but want it to say "Stop stealing my internet", as a suggestion to your neighbor? This can all fairly easily be done through the administration page.
I'm just here to help you get to the options in case you lost your little manual, or if you don't think there is anything useful in there (there is!).
First of all establish a connection between your computer and your router, wireless (if no password set, or you know it) or wired is fine. Go to your favorite browser, and for the web address punch in 192.168.1.1 (recently I ran into a Belkin which assigns itself 192.168.2.1) . This is the IP of your router (in most cases).
After the above step, you will be greeted with a log in form. The default login is usually "admin" for password, and leaving the username blank! If that doesn't work then check out your router's manual!
Ta-da! You are now most likely looking at your router configuration options.
PS This would be a good time to change the log in password!
