Website URL

Welcome back!

My name is John and I’m coming at you with blog post number 1 on Computer Talk Forum! We will be discussing how to buy a domain name and where to buy them.

Okay so what is a URL anyways?

That very well may be you’re firs question. Or, yeah I know what a URL is it’s the name of the website. Have you ever wondered what this acronym stands for? You may have never wondered about it up until today.

URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. I think we all understand that it’s the address of a web page. And, I think we all know that every website or web address (URL) has it’s own unique URL. This is the basics of how anything is found online. Your computer, or rather the search engine you are using. A couple examples of businesses and their URL’s are: and

Domain Names

We also call URL’s the Domain Name. A Domain Name represents the website, or the name you click on to go to a certain location or place online.

The Extensions of the Domain

What is an extension? there the .com, .net. Extensions are categories of Internet domain names. and there are a ton to choose from the .com, .net, and .org have been around the longest.

.com represents the word “commercial,” and is used the most

.net represents the word “network”

.org represents the word “organization,” and is used most often by non-profits and churches.

Can I get my First Choice?

There are quite a few places you can go to buy them. But remember, just because you have  a domain name in mind, doesn’t mean you will get that as your first choice. Each domain name is a unique name. Owned by someone. If it’s not available, it means that someone has already claimed this as there own domain name.

Where Do I go To buy them?

There are quite a few places that you can go.

Here is a list just to name a few:

  • GoDaddy – by far the most known.
  • NameSilo
  • Network Solutions
  • Name Cheap

Each of these places usually has a coupon code – just do a search online to find it!

One other thing to mention, If you’re a business, you want to make sure you’re business name isn’t being used by someone else. Do a search for what you would like your domain to be, see what comes up. If nothing appears, then you’re probably pretty safe.

A couple other things to note:

  1. The .com is the best, but .net and .org are okay too – stay away from the other’s.
  2. If you’re a business, I’d recommend you buy all three extensions. .com, .net, .org. This way, another business can’t come and buy your domain name with a different extension.
  3. This is an important one….Make sure you buy privacy for EVERY domain you purchase. If not, you’re personal information is not private and people can find it pretty easy.
